Hip Hop Wardrobe Selection 101
So let’s start with rule number one: choosing anything you’re going to be comfortable moving around and sweating in is a standard when going to a dance class. Most importantly, wear something that you feel confident and sexy/stylish in. If you’re uncomfortable in what you are wearing, your movements and confidence will reflect this.
If you are having a hard time finding what to wear, Pinterest is a great resource and Nickelz Production has a board to help:
Another place to check out is the website or social media of the dance studio that you are planning on going. Most likely, there will be photos of students dancing that you can draw inspiration from.
Additionally, LA dancers seem to have the hip hop outfit down to an art. Three of my favorite female dancers that I draw inspiration from are Jade Chynoweth, Janelle Ginestra, and Aliya Janell. Check out the Pinterest board that they inspired based on their outfits below:
How to pick out your shoes
If not specified by the teacher or a class, anything that you are comfortable in doing rigorous exercise is good. At Nickelz, we see many people wearing athletic sneakers or combat boots. If you are looking for sneakers specifically for dance class there are two points that you should look into.
1. Good stabilization of the foot and ankle during all types of motion.
2. Good cushioning throughout the sole, as you're likely to do a lot of jumping and landing.
And if you’re feeling up to rocking heels for a sexy street jazz or hip hop class, you may want to check with the instructor first, but 9 times out of 10 they’ll encourage you to go for it!
Should I wear accessories?
Although we all love a good pair of gold hoops, you should refrain from wearing jewelry that dangles because it will be in your way when doing large movements and you want to avoid getting it caught on something or risk losing in during a sharp turn. Hats should be fine, however, once again make sure that they fit tight enough so they don’t fly off when you are dancing.
